Brendan George made his all night tow from Jacksonville, FL pay off in a big way as he pocketed the $5,000 top prize on day one of the Jeg’s U.S. Open Bracket Championships presented by Racecraft Chassis and LB Trailer Sales. George used a stellar .006 reaction and 4.926 on his 4.92 target from his Mullis Race Cars machine to defeat fellow Florida competitor Steve Dweck(Hollywood, FL) in the final round. Dweck, at the wheel of his United Trailers Undercover Dragster, took home $2,000 for his efforts.
Nearly 250 entrants packed the grounds of Tri-State Dragway today for the Nitroplate Thursday warm-up, and there are more competitors rolling in the gate as the victory ceremony is wrapping up on the starting line. Despite the turnout being slightly under the 256 car minimum this morning, promoters Mike Fuqua and Dave Szerlag along with the Tri-State Dragway staff opted to go ahead and do away with the buy back option today, insuring that the entire event will feature no buy backs!
In addition to the Florida finalists, other racers visiting the pay window in the Nitroplate Thursday warm-up included semi-finalists Bruce Kaul and Barney Barnhardt. Quarterfinal finishers were John Labbous, Jr., former Million Dollar Race Winner Jeff Rucks, Mike Smith, and Brian Newport.
Tomorrow morning the action kicks off with the first of two $20,000-to-win events. Time trials start at 9 AM, with eliminations around 1:00 PM. At the culmination of the $20,000 event, the weekend’s hi-roller event, the Racecraft Chassis Challenge, will take place tomorrow evening. That special event will feature 64 of the top drivers in the country squaring off for a brand new, complete turn-key 2007 Racecraft Dragster with a 598 cubic inch Big Chief Taylor Racing Engines powerplant.
